Coffman and Focus on the Family
In response to the recent Focus on the Family sponsored ad
attacking Candidate Michael Bennet, his opponent, Michael Coffman, has joined
six other Republicans in supporting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or
ENDA. This is a big step toward the center for the Colorado Republican Congressman.
“I see this legislation as the workplace equivalent of the
Golden Rule — do unto others, as you would have them do unto you,” Coffman said
in a statement. “In the workplace, in 2014, we should judge employees the way
we would want to be judged — based on our qualifications, our contributions and
by our character, period.”
It’s not the first time Coffman has reversed course. Last
year he drastically changed is stand on illegal immigration. He even
co-sponsored a bill allowing undocumented immigrants to sign up for the military
to earn their citizenship.
Meanwhile, Colorado Democrats weren’t so quick to laud Coffman’s
change of heart. “Don’t let Congressman Coffman’s flip flop fool you — he’s
never stood up for equal rights.
“Colorado Republicans should come with a label: “Warning —
GOP candidates are trying to abandon their extreme positions so quickly that
voters may suffer whiplash,” said Colorado Democratic Party Chair Rick Palacio.
The majority of Coloradans support gay marriage and an
overwhelming number of them support civil unions, according to polling.
However, this week the Denver Post received a letter, reportedly
sent to Coffman's office from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) president, criticizing
Coffman for his lack of support for the gay rights agenda. HRC stated that it expected Coffman to
denounce Focus on the Family for its negative ad; instead he stayed silent.
While special interests are free to support whom they want, one can’t help but
wonder who is playing who this campaign season. One thing is certain, Focus on
the Family hires good actors.
